From Liverpool with love: What to do in this incredible city

Liverpool is famous around the world for two things – music and football. However, there’s much more to this seaside town than just the Beatles and Steven Gerrard.

You won’t be disappointed with a holiday to Liverpool. A city with a strong maritime history, Liverpool today is known for its outstanding museums, sport and nightlife, as well as having some of the friendliest locals in the world! Fun, friendly and full of things to do? It’s no wonder Liverpool is one of the hottest UK destinations!

Take in the museums

Liverpool has the largest collection of museums and galleries in the UK outside of London! If you’re interested in the city’s history, visit the new Museum of Liverpool or the Merseyside Maritime Museum, which focuses on Liverpool’s nautical past. There’s also the World Museum in St George’s Quarter where you can discover everything there is to know about the world. Browse ancient Egyptian artefacts, rare fossils and the on-site aquarium and planetarium to see everything from the sea to the stars. Art lovers will want to make a beeline for the Walker Art Gallery, home to one of Europe’s finest collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture and decorative art, with works by Rembrandt, Hockney and Freud.

For the football fans

Liverpool is synonymous with two of the country’s biggest football clubs – Everton FC and Liverpool FC. Everton play at one of the oldest football grounds in England, Goodison Park, while Liverpool play at the iconic Anfield Stadium. Tickets for games are always hard to come by, but are definitely worth getting hold of just to experience the action live and see the Liverpool crowd singing a rowdy rendition of their anthem ‘ You’ll Never Walk Alone’. The rivalry between the ‘reds’ and the ‘blues’ is legendary though, so make sure you choose your side wisely!

Listen to some music

The birthplace of legendary musicians such as Gerry & the Pacemakers, Frankie goes to Hollywood and Echo & the Bunnymen, music is in Liverpool’s blood. Heading to a bar and catching a live music show is one of the best things to do in Liverpool, where you can discover an up-and-coming group or listen to some fabulous cover bands playing your favourite hits. If you like classical music however, you simply have to visit the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, an art-deco Grade II-listed building founded in 1840. Make sure you stop for a pre-concert cocktail at the adjacent Philharmonic Pub, one of the most richly decorated Victorian pubs in Liverpool.

The story of the Fab Four

Speaking of music, a trip to Liverpool wouldn’t be complete without visiting The Beatles Story, a music museum on Albert Dock dedicated entirely to John, George, Paul and Ringo. Follow the greatest band on Earth’s journey from their humble beginnings to Beatlemania and beyond, and see their souvenirs, original instruments and even take a ride on a Yellow Submarine! There are many other Beatles tours operating in Liverpool – bus trips take you past landmarks such as Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. You can watch a live gig at the Cavern Club, where the Beatles first got their start, or take a tour of the childhood homes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

A wild day out!

Get back to nature on a trip to Liverpool with a day at Knowsley Safari Park, a huge 550-acre drive-through zoo where you can get up close and personal with wild animals like elephants, tigers and lions. However, it’s the baboons here that really steal the show – you have to keep an eye on these cheeky primates! After driving through all the animal enclosures, stretch your legs and walk through the Bat Forest and Bug House, watch an impressive Bird of Prey display, or catch a fun sea lion show. It’s not every day you can say you had lunch with a tiger!
