Wander the vineyards of the Bordeaux region
Want to visit the old town but don’t want to tire yourself out?Get the tram at the Saint-Jean stop. You’ll run past the Porte de Bourgogne, then the Quais de la Garonne and the Place de la Bourse, which are all part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Change at the Place des Quinconces, but keep an eye out for the majestic Grand Théâtre and the city hall in the Palais Rohan. On Place Pey-Berland with its famous tower of the same name, take another tram. Once you’re on board, look out for glimpses of Rue Sainte-Catherine and the Place du Palais. Once you’ve crossed the stone bridge over the Garonne, jump off and take your time in the lush green pathways of the Botanical Garden.
The most renowned vineyards sit just outside Bordeaux. Their villages are made all the lovelier by their manor houses.Follow the Château trail through the little village of Margaux to see beautiful Renaissance-inspired residences in old-style parks. Thanks to its Bordeaux-style streets with their classically inspired architecture, Saint-Julien-Beychevelle offers some lovely walks. And while you’re there, why not treat yourself to a glass of Saint-Julien? Prices in local bars are very reasonable. Travel further and you’ll reach Saint-Estèphe. Its vineyards border the Gironde estuary. You’ll be struck by the Baroque décor of the church at the centre of the village. Its square is home to the Maison du Vin – step inside to sample some affordably-priced Saint-Estèphe wine.
