Smart natives know Newcastle as a shopping destination, whether it’s for the main parade, Northumberland Street, its huge malls or its charming historic arcades. Stay in one of our Newcastle hotels for a warm experience blending comfort and attention to detail. Just what you’ll need after a hard day’s shopping!

The malls
For Newcastle’s one-stop shopping malls, head to Eldon Square or to the MetroCentre. Eldon Square counts almost 150 stores, ranging from big retail chains like Marks & Spencer to department stores like John Lewis, Debenhams and Fenwicks. Need a little pick me up? The mall is also home to Marble Slab and Starbucks for that ice cream or caffeine boost. The Metrocentre in Gateshead, which claims to be the biggest shopping mall in Europe, includes household names like House of Fraser, Next and Wallis. And apart from shops, there are plenty of food outlets, an IMAX cinema, and ten-pin bowling and arcades. Plus, there’s the added convenience of a regular shuttle to the mall from Monument and Central Station as well from Gateshead Metro station.
Traditional markets
For a change of scene, don’t miss the Grainger Market’s traditional stalls brimming with arts and crafts, handmade goodies and local foods. Right beside Eldon Square, and open daily, the Grade I listed building has stood since 1835. It’s still home to the covered market with 111 units of all kinds, from butchers to cobblers – and plenty of takeaways, should hunger strike. Alley 3 is home to Marks & Spencer’s Original Penny Bazaar. Opened in 1895, it’s the world’s oldest and smallest Marks & Spencer store! For more fresh food, the outdoor Farmers Market at Grey’s Monument is open on the first Friday of every month. With produce from no further than 50 miles away, you can be sure it’s local.
Charming historic arcade
Those who like to shop in a beautiful environment will be spoilt at the Central Arcade. You’ll find it in the Central Exchange Building where Grainger Street, Grey Street and Market Street meet. The pretty Edwardian arcade dates back to 1906, with ornate decor dating to 1840, Burmantofts tiles and swanky new stores like Space NK. Don’t miss Windows: a Newcastle institution, it’s the place for sheet music and musical instruments.
Newcastle’s discount shopping
Locals recommend the Boundary Mill stores in Shiremoor, where you’ll find discounts on big brand names like Austin Reed, Hobbs, Hush Puppies, and Pierre Cardin. Another option for Newcastle shopping is the Royal Quays, near the North Sea ferry terminal. The American-style outlet village counts brands like Gap, Nike and Next sitting alongside Moss and Mountain Warehouse, but with fewer stores to choose from. But by then, you may possibly be shopped out. Come back to your hotel for a welcome pot of tea while you unpack your finds.
