A botanical garden and university
The capital of Languedoc-Roussillon reveals its history through its magnificently preserved monuments. Your low cost weekend in Montpellier will be enhanced by a visit to five of the city’s emblematic sites we will recommend.
The Arc de Triomphe
The jardin des plantes in Montpellier is a listed historical monument. Here, you can discover rare species in its landscaped park and arboretum. Many architects have based their creations on the Montpellier model in other French cities, Paris in particular. This garden has been listed as one of the oldest in Europe.
The glory of the arts
Built in 1692, this monument pays homage to Louis XIV, patron of Montpellier. The Arc de Triomphe replaced a former monumental doorway in the ramparts. The medallions and bas-reliefs point to the influence of Parisian architecture on provincial buildings.
The place de la Comédie takes its name from the Comédie opera from where it fans out. This central square is easy to get to from our three Ibis hotels. A meeting point for many events, this Haussmannian décor gravitates around the Fontaine des Trois Grâces.
