Les Invalides, Napoleon’s last home
Go to the vast Parc du Champ de Mars for unique views of the Eiffel Tower. This old military training ground was created in 1780, but its lawns now welcome visitors and locals for picnics and major public events. At one end, the Eiffel Tower is an essential part of your stay in Paris, if only to take in the view from its 324m summit. A short distance away on the banks of the Seine is the Musée du Quai Branly. It was opened in 2006 and is dedicated to art and civilisation from Africa, Oceania, Asia and the Americas. Among its notable features are its garden and plant-covered façade. Carry your walk on down the banks of the Seine to the new Musée d’Orsay. It has been specially designed for the public to stroll down since 2013, with rest areas, sports activities, games and places to eat.
You’re just minutes from Les Invalides from your cheap hotel near Champ de Mars. The ‘National Hostel for Invalids’ and its distinctive golden dome were created in the 17th century by Louis XIV for soldiers injured and mutilated in war. The building is a real symbol of France’s military and political history, and now houses the Musée de l’Armée, the Musée du Plan-Relief and the Musée de l’Ordre de la Libération. It has two churches, including one in the dome: go there to see the tomb where the Emperor Napoleon was laid to rest in 1861.
