Museums in Liverpool

There’s a museum for everyone in Liverpool!

Did you know? Liverpool has the largest national museum collection outside of London!

As a European capital of culture, there are plenty of galleries and museums in Liverpool, dedicated to everything from its maritime history and music, to art, literature, and sport. Whether you’re a Beatles fan or an Everton supporter, or even just appreciate modern art, there is something in Liverpool’s museums for you.
For the Beatles fans
The Beatles museum Liverpool is located in the historic Albert Dock and is one of the city’s most-loved attractions, with Beatles fans from around the world coming to pay tribute to the Fab Four. The Beatles Story is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the lives and times of John, Paul, George and Ringo and features memorabilia including John’s glasses and George’s first guitar, interviews with the band and their family, replicas of their favourite locations and much more. The museum continues over at Pier Head where you can see the special ‘British Invasion’ exhibition which details how 1960s ‘beat’ groups conquered America, a photographic exhibition from Pattie Boyd (the ex-wife of George Harrison), and a 4D cinema experience which brings your favourite Beatles tunes to life.
For the footy supporters
Who do you go for – the reds or the blues? If you’re a Liverpool FC supporter, then head straight to Anfield to take a tour where you’ll be granted exclusive access to the members-only stands, the Kop stadium area, the press room and the Liverpool FC Story, the club’s interactive museum and the proud holder of the five European Cups. There’s also the Steven Gerrard Collection with the former captain’s memorabilia, trophies and awards. Everton fans will want to go the legendary Goodison Park to take a behind-the-scenes tour to see the dressing rooms, dug-outs and run down the players’ tunnel.
For the art-lovers
The Tate Museum Liverpool is the home of the National Collection of Modern Art in the north. Until the opening of the Tate Modern in London, the Tate Liverpool was the largest exhibition space dedicated to contemporary art in the UK. Also located on Albert Dock, just next to The Beatles Story, the Tate Liverpool is one of the most-visited museums outside of London. There is always something new happening here, although the permanent collection is equally impressive with work by artists such as Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Paul Cézanne and Henry Moore. The museum also puts on regular events, such as pop-up stalls, summer schools, and in-depth study days. And the best part is that the Tate Liverpool is completely free to enter!
For the history buffs
If you’re interested in this city’s incredible history, make sure you visit the Liverpool docks museum, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, also located next to the Tate Liverpool. Here, you can learn all about Liverpool, from its role in the American Civil War to the untold story of Titanic. ‘Seized!’ is a popular exhibition that shows you what it was like to be a customs officer, highlighting and all the bizarre things people have tried to bring into the country, from the 18th century to today – some of them you definitely have to see to believe! You can also take a free tour of the Old Dock, the world’s first commercial enclosed wet dock. From smugglers to slave-traders, the Merseyside Maritime Museum certainly has many seafaring stories to tell.
For the worldwide travellers
Want to know how the world works? Welcome to the World Museum, Liverpool’s natural history museum, which includes collections of ancient Egyptian artefacts, geology exhibits, animal specimens and a free planetarium. Must-see objects include a child mummy, dinosaur skeleton casts and even a meteorite from Mars!
