Restaurant guide Leeds

The best restaurants in Leeds

From French bistros to gourmet dining, Leeds has it all for the hungry traveller. Here’s our guide to the restaurants you simply must visit.

For Italian: Trattoria Il Forno
Are you a lover of Italian food? You must visit Trattoria Il Forno, which is located just outside Leeds, in the village of Horsforth. This family-run Italian restaurant serves up fantastic homemade pizzas and gelato, which tastes as good as you’ll find in Naples. Try their Bruschetta Napoli to start, with comes with fresh tomatoes and garlic, followed by the Tuscan pizza with mozzarella, mushrooms, artichoke, balsamic caramelised onion, air dried smoked ham and rocket. It would be simply wrong to leave without sampling their homemade gelato – the pistachio is to die for.
For Gluten-Free: 2 Oxford Place
If you’re gluten-free, you won’t go hungry in Leeds. 2 Oxford Place is a 100% gluten-free kitchen, and is perfect for all-day food. Their menu ranges from classic daytime fare – such as brunch staples like Eggs Benedict, sandwiches, salads and fish and chips, to elegant dinner options such as chicken liver parfait, confit duck cassoulet and teriyaki salmon fillet. There really is something for everyone here; the dinner mains features gluten-free chicken pie, bangers and mash and totally gluten-free sticky toffee pudding. It’s the stuff of dreams.
For Indian: Tharavadu
In the mood for a curry? Well, this place is for you. Tharavadu is an Indian restaurant where you will experience the traditional and authentic flavours of Kerala, South India. The chefs here were raised there and their food is a real reflection of the beauty of the place. Tharavadu is one of Leeds’ most popular Indian restaurants, and has been recommended in the Michelin Guide for its unique food. Try the chilli paneer, prawn masala and Idli - they are all divine.
For Wine: Veeno
Veeno is a favourite spot in Leeds for a glass of wine with friends. The Italian wine cafe is set in the heart of the city, on Duncan Street, and is a relaxing getaway from the buzzy of the city centre. Enjoy a glass of wine in their cosy mezzanine area, or take part in their special wine tasting experiences, which cost £19.90 for 5 glasses of wine. Of course, it would be wrong to drink wine without food – their Spuntini is delicious. Try the air-dried venison, bruscette with yellowfin tuna, and smoked curd cheese for a real Italian tapas feast.
For Beer and More: Bundobust
If you’re looking for an easy, casual dinner in Leeds, then look no further than Bundobust. Bundobust started as a collaboration between award winning institutions Prashad and The Sparrow Bier cafe in April 2013, and has become one of the city’s most loved institutions. An informal affair, Bundobust is a bar that sells Indian street food and the world’s best craft beer – a combination of fantastic pale ales and vibrant Indian food that’s a match made in heaven. Don’t miss their Bundo Chaat, a samosa pastry with tamarind chutney and chickpeas, okra fries and Dhal and rice – full of flavour and spice, all the dishes here are amazing.
