The best coffee shops in Edinburgh

From craft beers to gourmet restaurants, there’s something for everyone in this amazing city.
If you’re a latte lover, here’s our guide to the best coffee shops in Edinburgh.

Roseleaf
Roseleaf is a cosy, family-fun cafe in the historic Port 'o Leith. With quirky furniture and random treasure, the charm in this coffee shop lies in its uniqueness. Roseleaf is the place to come for a selection of homemade delights; from the kitchen they serve up hearty brunches and lunches, with lots of daily specials and freshly baked goods. The coffee here is great – order a cappuccino and watch the world go by with a slice of warm-from-the-oven banana bread, and you’ll be in seventh heaven.
Edinburgh Larder Café
Launched in 2009, The Edinburgh Larder Cafe has built a solid reputation as being the place to eat seasonal, locally sourced and tasty food in the heart of the city. It’s all about the homemade goodness here; they make everything themselves, including homemade granola, porridge and jam. The coffee is seriously delicious; they make their coffee with love and care, using beans roasted in Edinburgh by Artisan Roast. If tea is your thing, they also have tea which is blended in Scotland by Eteaket, who are based in Edinburgh. Come here for their dark chocolate and nut brownies, which happen to be gluten-free (although you would never know) - they are the talk of Edinburgh!
Leo’s Beanery
Leo’s Beanery are a family-run cafe in the middle of the beautiful New Town area of Edinburgh. The cafe is perfectly placed for locals and tourists alike and it’s a great spot to stop at whilst you are ambling through the lovely city of Edinburgh. The breakfast here is seriously good, with a focus on produce and ethically sourcing. The cafe serves bacon and black pudding from the fantastic Bowers butchers in Stockbridge, and the best free-range eggs. Try their Scottish porridge oats with stewed spiced apple, freshly baked scones –served warm, with jam and butter – or the ultimate breakfast of St James Smokehouse salmon and poached eggs on artisan toast. Don’t forget to order a latte as the coffee here is sublime.
Loudons Cafe and Restaurant
Loudons is a new coffee and bakery located in Fountainbirdge. The cafe specialises in delicious breakfasts, lunches, all-day weekend brunch and seriously tasty coffee. All their delicious cakes are made on site, and they also have gluten-free and dairy-free cakes, so no-one goes without a sweet treat here. There’s free Wi-Fi in the cafe, daily newspapers and magazines, spacious tables, perfect for working and comfy sofas for cuddling up with a good book. The coffee is a focus here and they use Artisan Roast, considered the best coffee in Scotland, to supply a blend of their freshly roasted beans. Don’t miss their week-end brunch – the Eggs Benedict with Scottish smoked salmon, or the Loudons Veggie Breakfast with veggie sausages, baked beans and homemade bread, is a delight.
The Southern Cross Café
The Southern Cross Cafe on Cockburn St is in the heart of the Old Town, which links the old town with the new town. Southern Cross is passionate about coffee, especially when paired with a delicious homemade cake. The cafe specialises in simple but good food, always trying to use Scottish produce where possible. The Full English breakfast here is a real pleasure to eat. Don’t miss their homemade vanilla cupcakes either as they’re seriously delicious.
