A remarkable heritage
Tours became famous even beyond the borders of the French kingdom because the revered St Martin became the town’s bishop in 371. He’s often pictured on horseback sheering off part of his cloak to share it with a poor person. Many faithful go on pilgrimage to Saint-Martin basilica, which has a replica of his tomb in its crypt. The basilica was built in Roman-Byzantine style in the late 19th century on the ruins of a collegiate church. Saint-Gatien cathedral is not far from the ibis hotels: this is an exceptional example of religious architecture dating from the 13th to 16th centuries. You’ll love it – it expertly combines several architectural styles: Roman, Rayonnant Gothic, Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance.
You’ll feel as though you’ve travelled back in time wandering Tours’ streets. On the road to old Tours and Place Plumereau, Gallo-Roman ruins and Napoleonic era buildings appear one after the other. This district has sublime medieval wood-panelled homes. In the Middle Ages, Tours prospered thanks to the many artisans and pilgrims living in and visiting the town. Huge fairs were held there. To extend your walk a little, go to the château. Its two towers date back to the 15th century. Other parts were added over the 18th century when the then-ruined château was restored. Afterwards, the botanical garden is good for peaceful walks among rare plant species and the animals that live around them.
