On the spot where modern-day Place de la Bastille now stands, there was once a fort-turned-prison. This was besieged by revolutionaries on 14 July 1789 and then destroyed. At its centre, the July Column topped with the Génie de la Liberté (or Spirit of Liberty) is the mark of another revolutionary period in July 1830 which forced King Charles X to abdicate.
