Just minutes from the train station, the ibis Northampton Centre is well located if you’re visiting the city or need a base to get around the Northamptonshire area. Situated in the East Midlands, Northampton was a major centre of shoemaking in the 20th century, but is now home to a vast range of industries. When in the town centre, set a couple of hours aside to visit 78 Derngate. The only house in England designed by the famous Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the unsuspecting exterior now houses an art gallery and a boutique restaurant. Take a guided tour of the interior of the Grade II listed Georgian house before exploring the rest of the town’s cultural quarter too. If you have more than just a few hours spare, head down the M1 to see the home of the world-famous Enigma machine at Bletchley Park. Key to Britain’s victory in the Second World War, the mathematicians at Bletchley were recently captured in the Oscar-winning movie, The Imitation Game – a biopic of Alan Turing. Visit the numerous interactive exhibitions in the Park’s huts, with costumes and sets from the film on display for all visitors to see.
