Walks through the Seine valley
Take your time to explore the pedestrianised streets of old Rouen: they’ll lead you towards beautiful Renaissance buildings. On Place de la Pucelle, you can admire the Hôtel de Bourgtheroulde. Its façade has windows decorated with sculpted panels. On the Rue du Gros-Horloge, the eponymous astrological clock sits atop an arch decked out with allegorical statues. Look out for the belfry beside the Gros-Horloge and the wood-panelled homes which make this part of the old town so attractive. To see more, go towards the Place de la Cathédrale, where the old Bureau des Finances is sure to catch your eye. Monet set up his easel on the upper floor of this building opposite the cathedral to paint his famous depictions of Rouen.
Take a cheap holiday in Rouen to enjoy riverside walks. As you stroll past the gateway to Normandy’s capital, stop off at Sahurs. The green banks of this village were painted by Impressionist artists. Its surrounding woodlands are good for tranquil walks along shaded pathways. On the other bank of the Seine is La Bouille, a favourite place among artists of the Rouen School. Stroll the village’s riverbanks – it’s so picturesque it feels like walking through a painting. We recommend the “Bac de Seine” ferry to get from Sahurs to La Bouille. This is one river crossing which won’t cost you the Earth.
