Travel back in time to the Middle Ages in Lucerne
Visiting Lucerne is primarily a trip back in time. But the city and its surroundings hold many other surprises that you can discover at lower cost.
In the surroundings
Formerly surrounded by 30 towers and thick walls, the city of Lucerne has retained a remnant of these fortifications with the famous Musegg Wall. Its curious covered wooden bridges are the hallmark of the city. The Kapellbrücke, built in 1333, is the oldest covered wooden bridge of Europe. A little further away, the Spreuerbrücke, is an amazing masonry work with 67 paintings on wood illustrating the theme of the Dance of the Dead. On the water, another building calls for your attention: a wooden dam. Thanks to an ingenious system of wooden needles that are raised or lowered by hand, the water level of Lake Lucerne can be regulated! But modernity definitely has its place in Lucerne. The Culture and Convention Centre - designed by French architect Jean Nouvel – is a great example of contemporary architecture and hosts a concert hall with world-class acoustics.
To make the most of your visit, purchase the "Tell-Pass". It will allow you to freely take public transport – train, bus or boat - throughout the region of Central Switzerland, for the duration of your choice. Take a trip on the Righi or ascend to the top of Mount Pilatus aboard the cog railway with the highest altitude in the world. Or perhaps hop on board one of the historic boats for a cruise on Lake Lucerne. The more adventurous can take the Titlis Cliff Walk, a pedestrian bridge along the cliff of Mount Titlis in the Swiss Alps, built at around 3,000 metres above sea level. The crossing is free... but it will definitely take its toll - in cold sweat!
