The palace of the Counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine
Saint-Jean baptistery was initially built in the 4th and 5th centuries and is one of the earliest examples of Christian architecture in Europe. A 6th century baptismal font originally made for immersing babies in holy water has been unearthed at its centre, and its walls are decorated with medieval wall paintings.
In a remarkable example of medieval architecture, what is now Poitiers’ Palais de Justice was the residence of the Counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine in the 11th century. The Plantagenets had its great hall built around the year 1200. This impressively sized room is now the “salle des pas perdus”, a foyer leading to the courts.
