Yanbu: Saudi Arabia's “spring by the sea” 300 km northwest of Jeddah lies the port city of Yanbu, on the Red Sea. Yanbu's importance as a commercial centre stretches back 2500 years; the Spice Route between Yemen and Egypt passed through Yanbu, and it served as an operational base for anti-Ottoman forces during World War I. Today Yanbu is composed of three sections: Yanbu Al-Balad, Yanbu Al-Nakhal and Yanbu Al-Sina'iya. The downtown district of Yanbu Al-Balad contains most of the city's historical structures, while Yanbu Al-Nakhal is a collection of farming villages. The Industrial City of Yanbu Al-Sina'iya, constructed according to a 30-year plan directed by the Saudi Royal Commission, transformed a previously undeveloped coastal area into a modern hub of refineries and petrochemical plants as well as residential spaces for a thriving international community. Yanbu's natural harbour is the source of the city's exporting power as well as a destination for fantastic scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing and fishing along Coral Gardens and Barracuda Beach. For family outings, barbecues or just a breath of fresh air, the lush Yanbu Lakes is a pleasant oasis of water and greenery.
